  In 1904 a group of East African pygmies was brought to the East Yorkshire. At that time there was great interest in Africa as the last inhabited continent to be explored and it had never before been possible to observe pygmies in real life. They created tremendous interest in the UK at a time when Darwin’s theory on the Origins of Species was still controversial, particularly amongst the religious establishment of the day. Christine Jarratt will describe what happened and describe society’s reaction to the visit.
