October 9 - What is the Universe made of?

Throughout history humans have looked around the world and up into the sky and asked what everything they could see was made from. In this presentation, Cath Blacketer will look back at the earliest recorded ideas, from the ancient Greeks to the medieval alchemists. The developments arising from the scientific revolution will be covered and how these led to our current understanding about the elements. Then a few cautious steps into twentieth century ideas about the quantum world and the mysterious dark matter.

Some members may have seen an early version of this presentation given by zoom during the Covid lock down times. Hopefully they will be happy to come along to see and hear this updated and  revamped presentation.
